EXXON DENIES OFFICIAL LEFT BECAUSE OF SPILL

The president of Exxon Shipping Co. has resigned, but his departure was unrelated to the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, the company announced Thursday.

Frank J. Iarossi is leaving to become chairman of the board and president of the American Bureau of Shipping, an international ship classification society, and was not fired, said Les Rogers, a company spokesman in Houston.

The announcement of Iarossi's departure comes two days after a federal grand jury in Anchorage, Alaska, indicted Exxon Shipping and its parent, Exxon Corp., on criminal felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from the March 24, 1989, spill.
