MANDELA REGINAS ANC POSITION

Nelson Mandela on Friday took over the second most senior post in the guerrilla-backed African National Congress after a two-day meeting of the organization's top policy-making body.

The 35-member national executive committee said it elected Mandela as deputy to President Oliver Tambo, who is recuperating from a stroke in a Swedish clinic.

The statement said the committee resolved to make contact with the South African government to settle dates and details for a preliminary meeting to clear obstacles in the path of full-scale constitutional negotiations.

The ANC also indicated it was concerned about Mandela's health, and would be selective about accepting foreign trips and future engagements for the 71-year-old black nationalist leader.
