JURY AWARD REINSTATED IN LOOSE TOILET SEAT CASE

A jury's $150,000 verdict for a woman who was injured when she fell from a loose toilet seat in a Richmond office building was reinstated Friday by the Virginia Supreme Court.

Richmond Circuit Judge T.J. Markow had ruled that the woman, Martha J. Love, contributed to her injuries by sitting on the seat even though she knew it was loose.

At her trial, she said the fall had injured her back and leg. A doctor testified that the fall had damaged a disc in her back, which required surgery.

The jury had considered whether Love was negligent and its verdict should not have been overturned, Justice Henry H. Whiting wrote for a unanimous court.
