The move makes Elson acting rector until the board meets later this month and elects a new chief, according to the board's bylaws.
As acting rector, Elson will temporarily chair the committee searching for a successor to President Robert O'Neil, who last October announced he was stepping down to become the founding director of UVa's Thomas Jefferson Center for First Amendment Studies.
Elson, a resident of Atlanta, has been a member of the board since 1984. He succeeds John Battle of Richmond, whose term also expired Feb. 28. Battle and Darden were not eligible for additional four-year terms.
The announcement comes two days after Gov. Douglas Wilder named seven new people to the board, including the wife of billionaire John Kluge, a major campaign contributor.
