UVA STUDY LED TO SERIES

Medical writer Charles Hite spent a semester at the University of Virginia this fall on a fellowship at the Center for Biomedical Ethics. As part of his studies, Hite spent much of his time in the hospital's medical intensive care unit talking with doctors, nurses, patients and families about the ethical problems they faced each day.

Hite, 41, has been a reporter at the Roanoke Times & World-News since 1978 and medical writer since 1983. He also has worked for the Miami Herald, United Press International, the Washington Daily News, the Charlottesville Daily Progress and the Richmond Mercury.

Stephanie Klein has been a staff photographer with the Roanoke Times & World-News for 2 1/2 years. She has a bachelor's degree in communications from Tulane University and a master's degree in journalism from the University of South Carolina. She was an intern at The Dayton (Ohio) Daily News and Journal Herald, in 1984 and a staff photographer at The (Myrtle Beach) Sun News before coming to the Roanoke Times & World-News. She has done freelance work for the Audubon Zoological Gardens Graphics Department in New Orleans and the University of South Carolina Sports Information Department.
