Big Brothers, Sisters sponsor bowling event
Bowl for Kids' Sake, a fund-raising event for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Roanoke Valley, will be held March 17 through 24 at five Roanoke-area bowling centers.
Participants, including individuals and league bowlers, line up sponsors to pledge an amount of money for each pin scored. The bowlers then compute the pledges according to the game scores, collect the money and turn it in to Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Prizes will be awarded based on the number of pledges turned in.
The kickoff event will be held March 17 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Vinton Bowling Center. League bowlers will bowl at their regular times and locations. Participating centers, in addition to Vinton, are All Star Lanes, Hilltop Lanes, Lee-Hi Lanes and Viking Lanes.

100th birthdays marked by two at Elks' home
Two residents of the Elks National Home in Bedford recently celebrated their 100th birthdays.
George P. Lewis of Middletown, Ohio, was born Jan. 13, 1890, and has been at the Elks' home since 1979. Lewis, a veteran of World War I, was a roofing and siding distributor before he retired. He is a widower and has one daughter.
Ralph Marting of Portsmouth, Ohio, was born Jan. 26, 1890. He also fought in World War I. Marting worked as a buyer and comptroller for a department store owned by his father and brother. He is a widower with one son and one daughter, and has been at the Elks' home since 1971.
