VMI'S HYMAN ON UTC'S LIST

VMI athletic director Eric Hyman is one of the candidates being considered to replace Harold Wilkes at Tennessee-Chattanooga.

Wilkes announced his retirement in January after 20 years as UTC's athletic director.

Hyman, 39, was hired as athletic director at VMI in 1984. He said UTC expressed interest in him several months ago and asked VMI officials for permission to talk to him.

"I wasn't seeking the job; [UTC] contacted me," said Hyman, who also was a candidate for the same job at Furman, which was filled in November by Ray Parlier.

"I've told everybody in our athletic department when somebody comes and tells you they are interested in you, I think you should talk with them. That makes you go through a thought process and analyze your career and where you are in it. I think that's a good thing."

Over the past six years, Hyman has overseen VMI's four-phase capital improvement of athletic facilities, which culminated in the opening of a new football building at Alumni Memorial Field in the fall.

Officials at Tennessee-Chattanooga were unavailable for comment on the status of their search for an athletic director, but sports information director Neil Magnussen said the university hoped to announce a decision by April.

"As far as my being a finalist, I have no idea," Hyman said. "My understanding is they'd probably make a decision sometime by the end of the month."
