MOST NATIONAL FORESTS LOSE ON TIMBER SALES

More than half of national forests lost money on timber sales last year, the government said Thursday in a report that environmentalists say support their call to roll back subsidized timber sales.

The U.S. Forest Service in its annual report said profits on all the national forests rose 4 percent last year even though the total harvest declined about 5 percent. Of the nation's 122 national forests, 66 of them lost money by selling timber at below cost, it said. - Associated Press
