Terry Holland, 31-year-old coach at Davidson College, is named to succeed Bill Gibson as Virginia's coach. "We have to set our goal at winning 20 games and the conference title," says Holland, who will enter the 1989-90 season with a 15-year record of 306-161 at UVa.\ 1976 ACC TOURNAMENT
In his second year at Virginia, Holland, 33, coaches Virginia to its first ACC championship with three victories in as many days (March 4-6) over nationally ranked teams at the Capital Centre in Landover, Md. Virginia opens with a 75-63 victory over North Carolina State, then beats Maryland 73-65 before upsetting North Carolina 67-62 behind tournament MVP Wally Walker.\

After finishing seventh and last in the regular season, the Cavaliers reach the ACC final for the second year in a row and have the lead before tiring in the last six minutes and losing to North Carolina 75-69 at the Greensboro Coliseum. Virginia, which carried a 10-16 record into the tournament, finishes 12-17.\ JEFF LAMP
Holland had a three-year record of 42-42 before signing Jeff Lamp, named Mr. Basketball in Kentucky, on April 26, 1977. The Cavaliers would enjoy a 92-32 record over the next four years and Lamp would finish his career as the leading scorer in school history with 2,317 points. On May 31, 1979, Ralph Sampson stepped in front of a microphone in the gymnasium at Harrisonburg High School to say he was signing with Virginia. The 7-foot-4 Sampson would be named national player of the year three times and the Cavaliers would go 112-23, setting an ACC record for wins over a four-year period.\ MARCH 19, 1980

In one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history, Chaminade University, an NAIA program in Honolulu, knocks off top-ranked Virginia 77-72 at the Blaisdell Center. North Carolina State defeats Virginia 63-62 at the Dee Center in Ogden, Utah, to advance to the Final Four. It is the last game of the four-year, Ralph Sampson era in which the Cavaliers were 88-13 the last three years. \ MARCH 24, 1984

Houston beats Virginia 49-47 in overtime in NCAA semifinals at the Kingdome in Seattle. Houston center Akeem Olajuwon has 12 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.\ NO. 1 RANKINGS

Virginia is deprived of a fifth appearance in the ACC championship game when North Carolina (29-2) defeats the Cavaliers 84-82 in double overtime. The Cavaliers overcome the loss of center Olden Polynice to return to the NCAA and finish 21-9 after losing to Wyoming and future NBA players Eric Leckner and Fennis Dembo 64-60 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.\ 1987-88
Virginia loses nine of its last 10 games to finish 13-18. It is Holland's first losing season in 11 years and the third in his 16 seasons at UVa.\ ILLNESS
Holland missed four games during the 1984-85 season and the Virginia Tech game in the 1985-86 season with an intestinal blockage that required surgery Jan. 2, 1989. Holland got out of the hospital Jan. 15 - in time to meet with the team before it annihilated North Carolina 106-83 at University Hall to end a three-game losing streak. He missed a total of six games before returning Jan. 28, 1989.\ 1988-89
After being picked for seventh place in the ACC, the Cavaliers contend until the final weekend, finishing in a second-place tie in the regular season. Virginia (22-11) advances to the final eight in the NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual national champion Michigan.\ MARCH 23, 1989
