"I really think it was a big help to me to run that final practice from 11 to noon," Markham said. "Going out for that last practice won us the pole, I think.

Meanwhile, many of the cars that were quick in the cool morning faded in the afternoon heat.
"Johnny Rumley was fastest in practice," Markham said. "And look where he ran [15th]. That shows you what happened."
North Carolinians Ken Mabe and Barry Beggarly qualified second and third. Mosely's David Blankenship was fourth, and Salem's Dicky Wilson fifth.
\ LUGNUTS: Chester's John Livingston qualified 13th in the LMSC field, but he was disqualified when it was discovered the he had used nitrous oxide, an illegal additive that gives an engine a short, sudden surge of extra horsepower, in his Chevrolet. . . . After Wilson, the area contingent was led by Daleville's Tink and Orvil Reedy. The son and father combination were 21st and 22nd, respectively. . . . The final 10 spots in each of the three division's starting fields will be filled today through seven 25-lap qualifying races. Due to the large number of entries, there will be three heat races in the LMSC class. The first heat starts at 1 p.m. . . . Sunday's tripleheader takes the green at noon.
