DUKE THUMPS MARYLAND

Mike Krzyzewski made two speeches Friday night. One emotional. One short.

Both worked.

Second-seeded Duke utilized the emotion provided by Coach K's halftime talk to an unresponsive blackboard and turned to an unexpected zone defense to pull away from Maryland 104-84 Friday in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

It was the first time a team had scored 100 or more in the tournament since Virginia, with Ralph Sampson, crushed Duke 109-66 seven years ago. Since that game, the Blue Devils have been among the national elite.

As much as Duke (24-7) was scoring, however, so was Maryland. The score was tied at 48 at halftime as Walt Williams scored 18 for the Terps.

Even with Jerrod Mustaf failing to score before intermission, Maryland (18-13) dominated inside and only a late nine-point spurt by Greg Koubek pulled Duke even.

At the break, Blue Devils big men Christian Laettner and Alaa Abdelnaby had one field goal on three shots between them, a point of discussion for their coach.

"He [Krzyzewski] had talked last week about playing with emotion," Laettner said. "This time, it was the last stand; he was fed up. He kind of was real blunt. He just stood and talked to the blackboard."

It took awhile for that to settle in. Maryland still was up 60-59 when Krzyzewski called for the "12" defense. That's a zone, but he hates to even use the word.

Nevertheless, it won the game. Maryland didn't score a field goal for the next 5:30, falling behind 76-66. After taking an 80-74 lead, Duke put away the game with a 12-0 run.

The Blue Devils played the zone for almost 15 minutes, outscoring the Terps 45-24. It may have been the longest period of zone in Coach K's 10 years at Duke.

"Maryland has gone through an awful lot," Krzyzewski said. The Terps had the flu bug, and they were hit with a numbing three-year NCAA probation Monday. "I thought the zone showed they were mentally tired, and our guys didn't let up."

The Duke spurt was accomplished mostly with point guard Bobby Hurley on the bench with four fouls. But the Blue Devils didn't turn it over, and Laettner (15 points, 13 rebounds) broke loose to help Phil Henderson (24 points).

"When they went to the zone, we didn't attack the basket," said Gary Williams, Maryland's coach. "They don't play much zone, but they did a good job tonight."

Walt Williams didn't score in the second half, and Mustaf, the Terps leading scorer with an 18.6 average, was 1-for-12 for the game and finished with seven points. His only hoop was a blind throw on a play when he was fouled.

One of the Terps' victories came against a Division II team, and their other 17 victories may not be enough to get them into the NCAA field this year, the last before the probation takes effect.
