BURGER KING CEO QUITS AFTER 16 MONTHS IN JOB

Burger King Corp., the struggling hamburger chain owned by Grand Metropolitan PLC, said Tuesday its president and chief operating officer was leaving.

Burger King said C. Ronald Petty, 45, had resigned, effective immediately. He had been president since November 1988.

Burger King operates more than 6,000 restaurants worldwide, with about 5,500 restaurants in the United States.

Analysts say that like other fast-food chains, Burger King's earnings have been hurt by overcapacity, rising competition and sluggish growth.
