NABISCO DROPS `MISLEADING' ADS

Nabisco Brands Inc. agreed Tuesday to discontinue three advertising campaigns that authorities complained were misleading, including the Fleischmann's margarine "healthier heart" promotion.

The company also agreed to pay $135,000 in legal costs associated with the campaigns for the margarine, Shredded Wheat and 100 Percent Bran.

Nabisco signed the agreement with 10 states whose attorneys general had complained about the ads.

Under the agreement, Nabisco promised:

Not to broadcast television commercials for Fleischmann's corn oil margarine that use the phrase "head start to a healthier heart" and "does your heart good";

Not to state or imply that the products will "cure, mitigate, treat, prevent or reduce the risk of heart disease or cause a reduction in cholesterol";

Not to advertise that "a leading consumer magazine" has concluded that Shredded Wheat is "high" in fiber;

Not to advertise 100 Percent Bran as "flavored with two naturally sweet fruit juices" unless such sweeteners are used exclusively.

The agreement was signed by the attorneys general of California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Texas and Wisconsin.
