VCU PRESIDENT SEARCH FRONT-RUNNER NAMED

Eugene P. Trani, vice president for academic affairs in the University of Wisconsin system, is the apparent front-runner for the presidency of Virginia Commonwealth University, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

A VCU delegation visited Wisconsin on Monday to perform a final background check on Trani, sources told the Richmond News Leader. The VCU Board of Visitors could elect a new president at its regular meeting Thursday, the newspaper said.

Trani, 51, was one of three candidates identified last month as leading prospects for the job. The other two were Charles A. Kiesler, 55, provost of Vanderbilt University, and Donald N. Langenberg, 57, chancellor of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
