MAN CHARGED WITH BURGLARY OF CHURCH

A Southeast Roanoke man has been charged with burglarizing a downtown church early Tuesday, police said.

Roy E. Mitchell, 20, of the 700 block of Tazewell Avenue was charged with burglary and grand larceny in connection with a break-in at St. John's Episcopal CHurch at 801 S. Jefferson St.

Police responding to a call of a burglary in progress about 4 a.m. saw a man running from the church. Mitchell was caught a short distance away, police said.

Authorities found a video cassette recorder outside an opened window of the church.
