Board members said they didn't want to set a precedent by granting the PTSA request only to be bombarded later with other special interest money requests.
"I think this is great, but we have to draw the line somewhere," said board member C.R. Sprinkle. "There are many real good things people bring to us for money. We have a hard time turning them down."
Sprinkle and other board members said they support the idea of an after-prom party, but need to be careful with their limited supply of money in these tight budget times.
"It's not specifically educational funding and we try to direct most of our budget in that direction," said Chairman J.W. Coggin.
Board member Guy Alphin suggested that the PTSA look to local businesses in Buchanan and area civic groups for financial support.
Alphin noted that he, for example, had not been contacted by any after-prom organizers.
"Don't worry, you'll from us," said Kathy Haynie, chairman of the after-prom fund-raising committee. "You can get your checkbooks ready."
