Council adopted a resolution that directs Smith to apply for a $270,150 grant, which is federal money given to states to distribute to localities.
It is projected that 64 residents of North Mill Road, Camp North Road and Summit Lane will benefit from the project. An area survey showed that 45 of the 64 residents fall into the low- to moderate-income bracket, making them eligible for the grant.
Some of the residents have no indoor plumbing and have had to rely on outdoor toilets.
The city's application for a similar grant last year was denied. Assistant City Manager Forest Jones said the city reapplied "because we think it's a good project. It should qualify for the grant according to specifications the state gives."
The project is a small portion of an approximately $2 million city-wide sewer project, expected to be funded with an upcoming bond issue.
