The board asked Commonwealth's Attorney William Heartwell last month to draft the noise ordinance in response to recent citizen complaints about noise problems in the county.
Homeowners in the Rainbow Forest subdivision are especially upset over unmuffled dirt bikes being operated on private property in their neighborhood.
Other county residents have complained about barking dogs. Both groups say they feel powerless in getting their neighbors to control the noise because there are no local noise laws that county deputies can enforce.
Some board members have expressed reservations about the proposed ordinance, fearing that it will be too strict and prevent citizens from using chain saws on occasion or other loud equipment in their own backyards.
If the supervisors approve the ordinance, they will hold a public hearing at their April 16 meeting.
In other business, the board will consider a special zoning permit request to allow the building of a trucking terminal in the Botetourt Industrial Park off Virginia 822. The permit has been requested by LMS Partnership, Stan Lanford and B&S Transportation Services.
The supervisors moved their meeting from next Monday, their regular meeting day, to Friday at 9 a.m. because of scheduling conflicts with board members.
