All children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30 are eligible for kindergarten. Parents or guardians of children who will turn 5 during October, November or December may register them also. School officials will counsel parents as to the readiness of their children for kindergarten and will decide whether or not the children will be enrolled.
Four records must be shown to school officials before a child may be enrolled. They are a birth certificate, a report of a physical examination, an immunization certificate and a Social Security number. The physical examination must have taken place during the past year.
Parents should register their children between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the schools the children will attend. Attendance-zone information is available by calling 981-2807.
Aluminum recycling aids Easter Seal camp
The Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs will raise funds for Camp Easter Seal East through an aluminum-recycling program. The money will be used to help complete a year-round swimming pool at the camp for disabled children.
During the first week in April, Roanoke-area residents may bring aluminum to Reynolds Metals recycling locations, advising the attendant that the aluminum is for "Pool Your Resources," the name of the campaign. The federation will receive the value of the aluminum plus a one-cent-per-pound donation for all aluminum recycled on April 7.
There are two Reynolds recycling locations in the Roanoke area - 102 Boulevard S.W., open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., and at Maxway Plaza in Bedford, open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
