`SHOE' CREATOR TO DESCRIBE ART OF CARTOONING

Jeff MacNelly, political cartoonist and creator of the comic strip "Shoe," will demonstrate his art at Barter Theatre Thursday at 8 p.m. in an event sponsored by the William King Regional Arts Center.

"Behind the Cartoon," a humorous and informal program geared to students and adults, will include demonstrations of cartooning techniques. MacNelly, whose political cartoons have earned him three Pulitizer Prizes, also will discuss his own background as an artist.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Reservations are recommended to assure seating and can be made by telephoning the arts center at 628-5005. Tickets also will be sold at the Barter box office Thursday, noon-7 p.m., with seating on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program has been organized and funded by the Affiliate Program of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

MacNelly also will conduct a seminar for art students from regional high schools and will be the guest at a reception and exhibition Friday. Further information is available from the arts center.

MacNelly came to Abingdon last fall to help launch the center's fund-raising campaign for renovation and expansion. - Southwest bureau
