GALAX SCHOLARSHIP FUND GIVEN $100,000

A $100,000 gift to create a full scholarship has been given to the Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education, which is raising money for scholarships to help Galax students in college.

The Robert V. Morris Sr. and Ethel R. Morris Scholarship gift was presented by their son, David Morris Sr. of Roanoke, in memory of his father and in honor of his mother. The gift will allow a continuing scholarship, with the first one going this year to a Galax High School graduate to cover tuition, room, board and books for four years. Preference will be given to scholarship applicants who have achieved Eagle Scout status or have handicaps.

Robert V. Morris founded radio station WBOB in Galax. He also was active in the Scouting program and the Shriners here.

The foundation, organized in 1987, has raised more than $185,000 toward its goal of $295,689. It presented its first 10 scholarships last year.

All tax-deductible gifts to the foundation are invested, with the interest generating the scholarships. - Southwest bureau
