DAR CONFERENCE OPENS FRIDAY

"A Century of Service to the Nation: 1980-1990" will be the theme of the 94th state conference of the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution, to be held Friday through Sunday at the Roanoke Airport Marriott Hotel.

About 500 members from 128 Virginia DAR chapters are expected to attend, representing about 9,000 members statewide. The Virginia DAR has met periodically since 1905.

Marie Yochim, president general of the National Society of the DAR, will be the guest of honor and opening-night speaker. She is expected to speak on the centennial theme, encouraging members to reaffirm their devotion to the ideals of "God, Home and Country."

The national society was founded in 1890 by four women who had unsuccessfully sought membership in the Sons of the American Revolution. The national group now has 204,000 members in every state, the District of Columbia and England, France, Mexico, Canada and Australia.

Membership is comprised of women over age 18 who can trace their ancestry back to someone who took part in the American Revolution as a soldier or patriot.
