Lt. John S. Barrett, 43, of the 100 block of Carrollton Avenue, Salem, also was charged with refusing to take a blood-alcohol test, according to warrants on file in Roanoke County General District Court.
Barrett was stopped by Roanoke County Deputy T.W. Kincaid at 11:40 p.m. on Woodhaven Road at Thirlane Drive, according to the warrant.
Roanoke Police Chief M. David Hooper said Monday that he was unaware of the charge. "I will look into it and determine what the circumstances are and make whatever decisions are necessary," he said.
Hooper said Barrett, the former head of the city vice squad, was a long-term, respected employee and never had been involved in any disciplinary action.
Barrett was released on a $500 bond at 7:10 a.m. Sunday.
He was scheduled to appear in court May 7.
