TECH SPONSORING HIGH-SCHOOL POETRY CONTEST

The Department of English at Virginia Tech is sponsoring the 1990 Poetry Contest for all Virginia high school students.

Entry deadline for the contest is March 31 and winners will be notified in May. Winners will receive cash prizes with $100 awarded for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.

Four fourth-place prizes of $10 each also will be awarded.

The judge for this year's contest is David Rigsbee, author of two poetry collections, "Stamping Ground" and "The Hopper Light." Rigsbee's poems have appeared in journals and anthologies, including The Georgia Review, The Iowa Review, Poetry, The New Yorker, The Southern Review and Vogue.

Students in grades nine through 12 are eligible to submit one poem of any length, form or subject. The entries must be typed or neatly written on an 8 1/2- by 11-inch sheet of paper.

The entry should not have a cover sheet. Necessary information should include the author's name, age, grade, home address and telephone number, name and address of the author's high school, signature of a sponsoring English teacher, parents' names and addresses and the name of the author's hometown newspapers. The information should be included on one page if possible.

The entries cannot be returned, but copies of winning poems and the judge's comments will be sent to those who include a self-addressed envelope with 40 cents postage.

For more information, call contest coordinator Joyce Smoot at 231-6515.
