AMES DROPS DIVIDEND PAYMENTS; NO PROFIT

The board of Ames Department Stores, owner of the former Zayre Department Store at Towne Square Shopping Center in Roanoke, has suspended payment of quarterly dividends "until Ames returns to a significant level of profitability." Its last regular payment was a quarterly dividend of 2.5 cents a share paid last Thursday.

Ames, based at Rocky Hill, Conn., earlier announced that it would not show a profit for the fiscal year ending Jan. 27. Ames bought the Zayre chain last year. - Staff report
