GUN BUYER INSPECTIONS GET GOOD, BAD REVIEWS

Opinions seem to be divided on the effectiveness of a new state law requiring an instant check of criminal records for purchasers of most handguns and certain other firearms.

"I have to confess that it is working better than I thought," said Scott Carter of the Clark Brothers Gun Shop in Warrenton.

Under the law that went into effect in Virginia on Nov. 1, 264 people have failed the check and were not allowed to purchase a gun, state police said.

"I'm sure it's causing some of the bad guys some inconvenience and not causing the good guys very much inconvenience," Carter said. "It's just a waste of time," said Gene King of King's Sporting Goods in Manassas.
