GILES SUPERVISORS BEGIN REVIEWING NEXT BUDGET

The Giles County Board of Supervisors has started reviewing a proposed $16.86 million budget for the 1990-91 fiscal year.

Supervisors Monday approved several small requests and budgets with little or no increase in local funding. The board will get to the meat of the proposed budget next Monday, when it sits down with the School Board to review its request for $11,630,172.

The countywide proposal of $16,863,509 is almost $1.4 million more than the current fiscal year's budget. Supervisors will continue reviewing requests of county-supported departments and agencies at work sessions over the next few weeks before deciding on a final budget that will go into effect July 1.

The schools' proposed budget represents an overall 4.62 percent increase in funding, but keeps local funding at $3.9 million.

Last week, the School Board voted to close Rich Creek and King Johnston schools to save money in the face of declining enrollment and increasing costs. The county is losing students - and state basic funds - but schools need about $900,000 to pay for mandated salary increases, asbestos removal, bus replacements and roof repairs, Superintendent Robert McCracken said.

Supervisors will begin Monday's work session at 6 p.m. in the county administration building.
