GOP CHAIRWOMAN LEAVING OFFICE

Joyce Lewis will end her term as Montgomery County GOP chairwoman when the Republican Party holds elections Saturday. She has served eight years on the GOP committee, including four as vice-chairwoman and the last as chairwoman.

"I didn't have any new ideas," Lewis said. "I just felt it was time for somebody else."

Lewis will continue to serve on the committee. She also is seeking re-election to her second term on Blacksburg Town Council.

Lewis said she believes that as GOP leader she achieved her goal of building a stronger grass-roots organization in the county.

So far, Christiansburg insurance salesman John Beamer and retired Virginia Tech physics professor Tom Gilmer have stepped forward as candidates.

Saturday's meeting is open to all Montgomery Republicans in county Circuit Courtroom B in Christiansburg at 10 a.m. Doors will close at 9:50 a.m.
