EPA REQUESTED TO RELAX AIR POLLUTION GUIDELINES

The state's congressional delegation is asking the Environmental Protection Agency to relax air pollution guidelines for several coal-fired power plants proposed for southern Virginia.

Controls for sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide would exceed levels in other states, according to a Feb. 21 letter to EPA Administrator William Reilly signed by Virginia's two U.S. senators and 10 House of Representatives members.

"We are concerned that unless EPA clearly establishes more moderate and appropriate standards, the Virginia projects will incur delays and excessive costs that will harm the state and its electricity consumers," the letter said.
