Lord Rothschild, the millionaire banker and decorated World War II intelligence agent, has died in London, his wife said in a statement Wednesday. He was 79.

Lady Rothschild said her husband died Tuesday. She did not reveal the cause of death or give any other details.

Rothschild was born Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild on Oct. 31, 1910, into the famous family of German-Jewish coin collectors who founded a banking dynasty.

After studying sciences, English and French at Cambridge, he went on to become a professor of zoology and was recognized as one of the world's leading experts on spermatozoa.

Britain awarded Rothschild the George Medal for bravery in World War II for defusing German bombs. He also received the American Legion of Merit for his wartime efforts.
