GLITCH HITS SELECTION OF PICK 3

The numbers in Virginia's Pick 3 lottery game were drawn out of sequence Wednesday night because of an apparent electrical malfunction in the control board for the three machines that select the numbered pingpong balls, lottery spokeswoman Paula Otto said.

The No. 2 machine selected ball No. 8 before the No. 1 machine, which is supposed to make the first selection, took ball No. 2, Otto said. The third machine then selected ball No. 1.

Since the machines themselves were working properly and the pingpong balls were bouncing correctly, lottery officials ruled that 2-8-1 was the winning Pick 3 number.

The Pick 3 game is broadcast on Virginia's public television stations at 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
