PART OF WASHINGTON'S OLD HOME REZONED

A portion of George Washington's boyhood home has been rezoned for a shopping center, prompting criticism from some residents who said the entire site should be preserved.

Tuesday night's action by the Stafford County Board of Supervisors came after months of negotiations between county officials and Samuel and Irma Warren, an Alexandria couple who own the land.

The board also agreed to move ahead with their plans to restore another part of the site. Supervisors said they worked out the best deal they can, and have obtained the land they need to restore Washington's home.
