SOME FARMERS SEEK LOOSER WETLANDS RULES

Some Virginia farmers say federal regulations to protect wetlands involve too many government agencies, rules that are too broad and a lack of respect for individual property rights.

About 100 farmers and agriculture officials attended a Virginia Farm Bureau meeting on Tuesday to discuss proposed legislation easing federal wetlands regulations.

John Baum, a veteran Virginia Beach city councilman and farmer, said 80 percent of that city is wetland by federal definition, and thus off limits for clearing as farm land or development.
