JURY LIMITED IN HICKS TRIAL

Campbell County residents cannot serve on the jury in the capital murder trial of James I. Hicks, a former teacher accused of having his wife killed.

That ruling came Wednesday afternoon from Campbell County Circuit Judge J. Samuel Johnston.

Johnston made his decision after hearing from witnesses, including newspaper reporters. The witnesses said many county residents had made up their minds on Hicks' guilt or innocence.

Hicks, 44, faces a capital murder charge in connection with the death of Lena Hicks on Jan. 8. Reuben Gregory Barksdale, a carpenter from Lynchburg, also faces a capital murder charge in connection with the killing.

Barksdale has told authorities he killed Lena Hicks at the request of her husband and that he was paid for committing the act. - Staff
