The vote came after months of negotiations between county officials and Samuel and Irma Warren, an Alexandria couple who own the land.
Before Tuesday night's vote, local resident Pamela Brennen told the board, "I'd like not to have to say to my kids in five years, `Yes, Ferry Farm, it's down next to the Days Inn on the right."'
The board also agreed to move ahead with plans to restore another part of the site. Supervisors said they worked out the best deal they could, and have obtained the land they need to restore Washington's home.
In January, the Warrens gave the county 24 acres at Ferry Farm, which is between Virginia 3 and the Rappahannock River. The Warrens on Tuesday gave Stafford another 15 acres in exchange for rezoning the 34 acres for commercial use. The 15 acres include an ice house and the shed where Washington is said to have taught himself to survey land.
