Mayor Meredith Waid recently told council members that Corky Bolton is selling the building that houses the town's offices. The building is being sold to Don Skibinski, who plans to use it to expand his Fincastle Drugstore.
Waid said council is looking for a place to lease inside the town's limits.
In other action during its March 13 meeting, council:
Voted, after an executive session, to give town employees a 3 percent cost-of-living increase in their salaries and to increase mileage reimbursement from 20 cents to 23 cents per mile. The mileage rate was changed after a town employee brought Waid a consumer column from the Roanoke Times & World-News that said normal mileage reimbursement is 25 cents per mile.
Waid said the new rate is a compromise.
Discussed further improvements to the Big Spring rehabilitation project. Council voted to build a turnstile and fence around the spring. Historic Fincastle will pay for the turnstile, and the Big Spring Garden Club will pay for the fence. Council also gave permission to the Girl Scouts to plant a tree on the Big Spring lot.
Approved a request from the mayor to give a $200 donation from the general fund for flower baskets to be placed on utility poles.
Agree to award prizes again on Clean Fincastle Day, April 21. A $25 prize will be given for the most bags collected, and $15 for the runner-up. Groups will receive $25 for participation. The money comes from the litter fund the town receives from the state. The cleanup begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.
Was told by the mayor that Ken Coffman, the assistant to the director of the town's water-treatment plant, will be named Water Operator of the Year by the Virginia Rural Water Association. Coffman was chosen because he earned his water and sewage operator's license in about eight months, when it usually takes at least a year, Waid said.
