WESTERN UNION MAY FILE BANKRUPTCY

Western Union Corp., plagued by huge debt payments, said Wednesday in a filing that it may be forced to seek bankruptcy protection.

The 139-year-old company that pioneered global business communications with its telegraph and telex services mentioned the possibility in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. In its annual filing of its operating results, Western Union said that if it was unable to reach an agreement with bondholders on a refinancing, it might seek protection under the Federal Bankruptcy Code.

But the president and chief executive, Robert J. Amman, said Wednesday night that the company's management had no plans to file for bankruptcy.
