FORMER ROANOKE MAN WINS AWARD IN FLORIDA

Wyatt Buckner, a former Roanoker now living in Tampa, Fla., was named citizen of the month for February by the North Tampa Chamber of Commerce.

Buckner, 32, who was born with muscular dystrophy, was honored for his work with Self Reliance Inc., a center that teaches disabled people how to care for themselves. He is program coordinator for Self Reliance, overseeing transportation, counseling, outreach and ramp-building programs for the organization.

Buckner grew up in Northwest Roanoke, and is a graduate of William Fleming High School. He holds a bachelor's degree in rehabilitation from Florida State University and a master's degree in rehabilitative counseling from the University of South Florida.
