Buckner, 32, who was born with muscular dystrophy, was honored for his work with Self Reliance Inc., a center that teaches disabled people how to care for themselves. He is program coordinator for Self Reliance, overseeing transportation, counseling, outreach and ramp-building programs for the organization.
Buckner grew up in Northwest Roanoke, and is a graduate of William Fleming High School. He holds a bachelor's degree in rehabilitation from Florida State University and a master's degree in rehabilitative counseling from the University of South Florida.
