Roanoke Valley Psychiatric Center and the Roanoke Times & World-News have been honored by the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Roanoke Valley.
The private advocacy group gave the pyschiatric center its outstanding public-service award in recognition of the center's educational efforts and responsiveness to community needs, according to Everett Franklin, the alliance's president.
The alliance gave the newspaper its excellence in media award for a series of stories last fall examining services for mentally disabled and elderly people living in homes for adults.
Nancy Proffit was honored as the alliance's outstanding volunteer. Proffit is a former president of the alliance and currently serves as vice chair of the state protection and advocacy council for the mentally ill. She recently helped start an alliance chapter in Danville.
The awards were presented last week at the Roanoke Valley chapter's annual meeting. The alliance also elected new officers: Barbara Higgins, president; Nancy Canova, vice president; Helen Franklin, secretary; and Joe Pakush Sr., treasurer. Former Roanoke man wins award in Florida
Wyatt Buckner, a former Roanoker now living in Tampa, Fla., was named citizen of the month for February by the North Tampa Chamber of Commerce.
Buckner, 32, who was born with muscular dystrophy, was honored for his work with Self Reliance Inc., a center that teaches disabled people how to care for themselves. He is program coordinator for Self Reliance, overseeing transportation, counseling, outreach and ramp-building programs for the organization.
Buckner grew up in Northwest Roanoke, and is a graduate of William Fleming High School. He holds a bachelor's degree in rehabilitation from Florida State University and a master's degree in rehabilitative counseling from the University of South Florida. Three pianists, students of the Hollins College Preparatory Division, gave their senior recital recently in Talmadge Hall on the Hollins campus.
Laura Kilgore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kilgore, is a senior at William Byrd High School. In addition to the piano, Kilgore plays the alto saxophone and flute.
Kristi Blalock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Blalock, is a senior at Cave Spring High School. Blalock recently was awarded a position in the All-State Orchestra.

Christine Martin has been elected woman of the year by the Tanglewood chapter of the American Business Women's Association.
Martin is a consumer interview supervisor with the Credit Marketing and Management Association. She has been a member of the chapter since 1987. Vinton woman honored by Epsilon Sigma Alpha
Nadyne Abbott of Vinton has received the Diana Academy of Nobel Achievement Award form the Beta Delta chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Women International. The community-service award is the highest honor the sorority gives to those outside the group.
Abbott was recognized for the more-than-700 hours of volunteer service that she has given to Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley and the Samaritan Inn.
