THE TIPOFF

SOOTHING MUSIC: The music of Johann Sebastian Bach will receive a workout Saturday from noon to midnight when the Bachathon takes place at Christ Lutheran Church in Roanoke.

Ninety pieces of music will be performed by 180 musicians in 34 groups. They'll use 23 different instruments, and, of course, the human voice.

The free event is sponsored by the Roanoke Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, financed in part with a grant from the Arts Council of Roanoke Valley.\ HAYDN AT HIS HEIGHT: Franz Joseph Haydn's Mass in B flat Major will be presented Sunday afternoon at 4 at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in Roanoke.

It will feature chorus, soloists and orchestra conducted by Richard Cummins. Admission is free though offerings are accepted. Child care is provided.\ EASTER'S TIME: French horn player Wallace Easter will be the featured soloist Sunday in the 3 o'clock concert of the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra at E.C. Glass High School auditorium.

He will handle the solo in the Strauss Horn Concerto.

The symphony also will perform Nicolai's Overture to "The Merry Wives of Windsor" and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3, known as the "Scottish."

Tickets are $7 and $5. For information, call (804) 845-6604.\ LIVELY: The Tony Rice Unit, an innovative, energetic string band, will play Sunday afternoon at 3 at Appomattox County High School auditorium to raise money for the Historic Appomattox Railroad Festival.

Tickets are $12 at the door for adults, $5 for childen age 12 and under.\ TALKING AND FEASTING: Planned Parenthood of Southwest Virginia will have its annual "Tasting and Toasting" fund-raiser Sunday evening from 5 to 7 at Hollins College.

Gourmet specialities from restaurants and caterers make this a tasteful event. Tickets are $30 apiece. For reservations call 362-3968.\ SAPPY: The Whitetop Mountain maple syrup festival will be Saturday and Sunday and again next weekend in and around Whitetop.

A pancake meal will be served at Mount Rogers school house on U.S. 58, where crafts will be on sale. Chili beans and hot dogs will be served from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mount Rogers fire hall, also on U.S. 58, and music will be performed there.

Tapping tours and a slide show also will be presented nearby.

For information, call 388-3283 in the mornings or 388-3294 n the evenings. \ GETTING CENTERED: "Carwash" is the name of the staged reading set for Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. at Mill Mountain Theatre at Center in the Square.

It's a 45-minute Centerpiece, free to the public.\ BATTERY POWERED: The six-member Battery Dance Company of New York will bring its ballet-mixed- with-modern dance program to Franklin County High School on Tuesday night at 8.

Admission is free. On Monday the troupe will hold a workshop at the school from 4 to 5:30 in the afternoon. It, too, is free.

The troupe's visit is sponsored by the student activities office at Ferrum College. At the moment, the troupe is the dance company in residence at Radford University.\ MASKED MAN: Acting, body movement and sculpture will be offered Saturday morning at 10 at Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, when the Rainbow Splashes children's series presents The Mask Man/Faustwork. One guy will do it all, hoping to inspire awe.

Tickets are $5. The number to call is 342-5790, which is assigned to the Arts Council of Roanoke Valley.\ WOMEN IN POLITICS: Will be the subject of syndicated columnist Ellen Goodman's talk tonight at 7:30 at Roanoke College's Bast Center in Salem.

Tickets are free but they must be reserved by calling 375-2333 this afternoon.

Goodman's topic officially is "Women In Politics: Today's Challenges and Tomorrow's Opportunities." Her lecture is the keynote address for the Southeastern Women's Studies Association annual conference at the college this weekend.\ COZY: Acoustic guitarist Jim Scott will perform Thursday night at 8 at the sign of "The Sculptor" at 123 Norfolk Avenue in Roanoke. Seating is limited to 40.

Tickets are from $5 to $10 and may be picked up at the Plowshare Peace Center at 125 West Kirk Avenue in Roanoke. The number there is 985-0808. Proceeds will go to the peace center.
