APPALACHIAN CULTURE CENTER FUNDS CANCELED

The state has canceled funding for a regional Appalachian arts and culture center, but said Virginia may fund individual center projects within its borders.

Although Appalshop, about an hour's drive from Norton in Whitesburg, Ky., is incorporated in both Virginia and Kentucky, the Virginia Commission for the Arts decided it is not automatically eligible for state funding.

The state arts commission will consider only giving Appalshop money for special projects staged in Virginia.
