N-PLANT TECHNICIANS PLAN STRIKE

Radiation technicians will go on strike Monday at 38 nuclear power plants that have closed down for refueling, according to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which is seeking recognition as the workers' bargaining agent.

It would be the first strike against the nuclear industry as a whole, experts in the field said, and would come at the peak work season for nuclear reactors as they are being prepared for summer, when the demand for electricity is greatest.

Nucleonics Week, an industry trade publication, said the reactor service business had been particularly busy even before the threat of labor unrest.

The union, which already represents most permanent workers at nuclear reactors, is seeking to become bargaining agent for itinerant technicians who travel from reactor to reactor for work when the reactors are being refueled or undergoing maintenance. - The New York Times
