THOUSANDS CELEBRATE ARCTIC TREKKERS' RETURN

A high school band played and children sang and read poems Saturday as 7,000 people welcomed members of the International Trans-Antarctica Expedition and their dogs back to Minnesota.

"This is the greatest moment in my life right here," expedition co-leader Will Steger told the crowd in front of the State Capitol. "We certainly felt your prayers. It got us through some almost seemingly impossible situations."

Steger, of Ely, and his five fellow adventurers, each representing different nations, made the longest unmechanized passage across the frozen continent. Their 3,100-mile, 219-day ski and dog sled journey ended March 3. - Associated Press
