PROUD OF VINTON FOR RECYCLING

I HAVE BEEN proud to be a resident of Vinton for the past 30 years. The recent action by Town Council concerning recycling has made me even prouder.

Town Manager George Nester and the others responsible for pushing for and implementing a mandatory recycling program for the town are to be commended. I hope other residents feel the same.

While I realize the motivation to institute the recycling program was partly economic (to save on fees charged to dump trash at the regional landfill), I believe town officials also were concerned about our environment. For too long we have taken our natural resources for granted. Recycling is a step in the right direction to help save our environment.

My household already has begun recycling newspaper, glass and plastic. Once you get into the habit, it's really not that hard!

With the 20th anniversary of Earth Day approaching (April 22), it is a good time to dedicate ourselves to being more environmentally conscious. I, as a proud Vintonite, am glad to do my small part. ROB LYON VINTON
