Prior to returning to the New River Valley, Fariss was director of the Department of Clinical Investigation at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash. His principal areas of research were the causes of diabetes mellitus and the metabolism of sugars.
Fariss was director of the Endocrinology Fellowship and Consultant in endocrinology to the Surgion General of the U.S. Army. Fariss has had many articles and abstracts published in medical and scientific journals.
While on active duty with the Army, Fariss was decorated with the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster. He was recipient of the Meritorious Service Award from the Army surgeon general. He retired from the Army with the rank of colonel.
Fariss is a fellow in the American College of Physicians and a member of the Southwest Virginia Medical Society, the American Federation of Clinical Research, the Endocrine Society, the American Diabetes Association, the Southern Medical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Science and Alpha Omega Alpha.
Fariss also is a member of the Pulaski County Board of Supervisors, representing the Ingles District.
Fariss has a private practice in endocrinology and metabolism in Radford. He is continuing his research interests at Virginia Tech, where he is an adjunct professor of biology.
