NO FINES FOR AIRLINES FINDING OWN FLAWS

Airlines will be let off the hook for safety violations if they catch a problem themselves, correct it and report it, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Tuesday.

In a move praised by the airline industry as a step toward ending an adversarial relationship with the government, FAA Administrator James B. Busey said no fines would be levied against airlines that effectively audit their own safety.

The program could require airlines to designate safety auditors or set up separate safety departments, Busey said. - Associated Press
