TWO ARRESTED IN SOUP-KETTLE TAMPERING

A grudge apparently was the motive for the placement of cocaine-tainted syringes in soup kettles at three Chesterfield County grocery stores, police said Tuesday.

"The obvious implication of that is that tampering with the soup would hurt customer relations and cause the stores to lose business," said county police Capt. James P. Bourque.

Bonnie Grissom Bayliss, 26, and Joseph E. Scearce Jr., 38, both former employees of Safeway Stores Inc., were arrested Monday and charged in the food tampering.

Bayliss was charged with three counts of adulteration of food products. Scearce was charged with one count of adulteration of food products.
