WOUNDED BOY LISTED AS SERIOUS

A 15-year-old Roanoke boy who was shot in the chest last week by a family member was listed in serious condition Tuesday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Frankie Lee Weeks of the 2200 block of Russell Avenue Southwest had earlier been listed as critical in the hospital's pediatric intensive care unit.

Weeks was shot March 20 by a family member who told police that a small-caliber handgun taken from Weeks' mother's bedroom accidentally discharged.

Police have not identified the family member, and an investigation is continuing.

Police said this week they hope to talk to Weeks when his condition improves before making a decision on whether to file charges.

But Weeks' mother said her son has told her he remembers nothing about the incident.

Wilma Weeks said she believes the shooting was an accident. While hospital officials first said her son was not expected to live, Weeks says she now has some hope.
