Pride of Virginia Meats Inc. is recalling "Pride of Virginia Salads - Chicken Salad," which is distributed within a 15-mile radius of Lynchburg. "EST. P-4038" is printed inside the USDA inspection seal on the label. The recalled chicken salad has a "sell by" date of March 26 on the bottom of the containers.
Dr. Lester M. Crawford, administrator of the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, said routine monitoring uncovered the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Consumption of food contaminated with that bacterium can cause listeriosis, a rare but potentially serious disease, he said.
