SHELBURNE NAMED MVP FOR RADFORD BASKETBALL

Ron Shelburne capped a solid baskeball season Monday night when he was named the most valuable player for Radford University.

Shelburne, a junior from Pulaski County High, averaged 12.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for the Highlanders (7-22). The 6-foot-7 center started slowly, scoring in double figures in only one of Radford's first 10 games. But he averaged 14.7 points the rest of the way.

Other players honored at the Highlanders' banquet Monday night included: senior forward Tim Blassingame, who received the Coach's Award for all-around effort and performance; sophomore guard Stephen Barber, who was named the team's outstanding defensive player for the second straight year, and freshman Tyrone Travis, who was honored as the team's top rebounder, with an average of 5.9 per game.
